EOD Problems

Just to refresh your memory, here is how you should use the EOD drives.

  1. Run the program mounteod. Hitting Return always chooses the default value.
  2. You will be prompted for the drive's hostname. Hitting Return should be sufficient.
  3. Next choose which drive you want to mount: eod0, eod1, ..., eodn.
  4. The next prompt only requires input from you only if you want to unmount (u followed by a Return) or mount read-only (r followed by a Return).

To format an optical disk, first login on the EOD host workstation. Place the disk you want to format in a drive and then execute formateod. This script is located in /applic/nir/sysman with a link to it from /applic/nir/bin.

Floppy Disk Problems

In order for floppies to work with mtools, you need to disable them from being mounted by the volume manager. To do this, comment out the "use floppy" command in vold.conf. HUP "vold" for the changes to take effect (this means kill -HUP x, where x is the PID of the "vold" process.

To format a floppy for use with DOS-based machines, run:

fdformat -d

See the man page for fdformat if you want more information.

8mm Tape Problems

We have an EXABYTE manual somewhere. The only real problems you should run into are blinking light errors. All you usually need to do is put a cleaning tape in the drive. Don't forget to record how often the cleaning tape has been used!
