Using Metamail

Metamail has been installed in /applic/nir/... This program is very useful for dealing with mime-compliant messages we all receive from time to time. This info is sketchy because I have only used it briefly and just want to acknowledge its existance before I leave Rochester.

You need a .mailcap file in your home directory. If you may already have one, but it might be brief you didn't know you had one. Just do the following:

WRT mailcap files, the default can be /etc/mailcap (or other places) or you can set your MAILCAPS environment variable to point to a specific mailcap file:

To view a mime-compliant message, use elm to read your mail or save the mail message to a file with your usual mail program and then use metamail to decode it:

metamail mime-file

To send a mime-compliant message, use metasend. You will be prompted for various information and then for a file to send.
