Accelerated motion
- Found velocity increased as ball fell, i.e.
- 1st sec -- 1 m/s
- 2nd sec -- 2 m/s
- 3rd sec -- 3 m/s
- Objects fall with increasing velocity, i.e. they are accelerating
- The acceleration is constant
- Objects of different mass showed the same acceleration
- In direct contradiction to Aristotle -- larger, more massive objects fall faster
- In free fall the acceleration is 9.8 m/s/s or 32 ft/s/s
- 1st sec -- 9.8 m/s = 32 ft/s
- 2nd sec -- 19.6 m/s
- 3rd sec -- 29.4 m/s ~ 60 mph ignoring air friction!
- How far would you fall in 3 sec?
- average speed half the terminal velocity, i.e. 29.4/2 m/s
- distance = speed x time ~ 3x15 m ~ 50 y = 150 ft ~15 stories
