Jupiter’s Atmosphere
Belts (dark) and Zones (bright)
- caused by convection currents
- driven by insolation and internal heat
- cf. Earth
- high and low pressure regions drive winds and weather
- powered by insolation and water condensation and evaporation
- Low pressure -- sucks -- bad weather vg. 70
- rotation of Earth creates cyclonic patterns
- counter-clockwise in N. hemisphere
- Jupiter rotates faster (10 h) and is 10 times bigger
- rotation forces much stronger
- cyclonic patterns are stretched into belts and zones
- Zones are bright because of reflective clouds
- warm gas rises and cools
- clouds condense Fig. 24-4
- water ~ 270 K, ammonia ~ 130 K
