  • True for most other satellites (Galilean, etc.)

• Largest features -- dark maria (man-in-moon)

  • originally thought to be oceans
  • Are extensive lava flows
    • “flooding” caused by early giant impacts puncturing crust

• Many impact craters

  • clue to moon’s history
