Greenhouse effect

If sequestered CO2 released (i.e. by burning fossil fuels)
- T increased further
- ice and snow would melt
- sea level would rise
- coastal areas flooded (all of Florida, NYC, LA, etc.)
Example: Venus -- “runaway greenhouse”
- 90 atmospheres of CO2
- surface temperature of 750 oK
  - hotter than home oven (574 F = 574 K)
  - hot enough to melt lead!
  - the end of life!
- There is a worldwide consensus that CO2 production be curtailed
  - better safe than sorry
- Opposite effect -- impact-extinctions (dinos), “nuclear winter”
  - atmospheric particles block sun, cool surface
