• dust (silicates (Mg,Fe)SiO4 carries the heavy elements

• Star (in waist of nebula) is invisible
  • dusty disk obscures it
  • M’-band (4700 nm) penetrates through dust
    • revealing Red Giant star

    • First generation stars formed out of H and He alone

      • Still expect collapse to disk-shaped nebula
      • Planets could form
        • but no heavy elements
          • No terrestrial planets
            • no Fe, rock or water
          • Only gas-giant planets like Jupiter (Jovian)

    • The sun formed 4.6 billion years ago out of highly enriched material

      • The sun is a second or third generation star
